What are Skip Bins?

Skip bins are large open-topped waste containers built for loading rubbish into trucks. Skip bins have a distinct trapezoid shape and they have a smaller bottom and a wider top. A typical empty small skip weighs around 550 lbs. In this page, we list down some of the types of skip bins to help you choose the right one for you.

Different types of skip bins

1. Hooklift skip bin

This type of skip bin is defined by the method of how waste bin is loaded on and off the truck. The truck uses a hydraulic hook to grab the waste bin to roll on and off the back of the truck. Hooklift skip bins are usually hired for industrial and commercial waste removal. This type of skip bin can also be used for large domestic waste removals. Hooklift skip bins have large opening doors at the back to allow bobcats to drive inside if the job requires.

2. Mobile skip bin

The perfect skip bin for hard to reach locations like the inside of a garage or under carports. Mobile skip bins don’t require permits in order to do waste removal because it is a road registered trailer. However, mobile skip bins only allow light green and light building waste and those that can be classified as general waste. Heavy wastes like bricks, soil, concrete, or rubble are not allowed in mobile skip bins. Mobile skip bins usually come in 3 and 4 cubic metres. There are other areas, however, that offer more sizes but have limits on the weight they carry for a safe transport.

3. Marrel

This is the most popular or widely used skip bin. The marrel skip bin can be used both for commercial and domestic rubbish. This type of skip bin usually comes in varying sizes. Marrel skip bins have sizes ranging from 2 cubic metres to 17 cubic metres.  They have higher sides and are shorter in length compared to hooklift skip bins.

Marrel skip bins don’t require a lot of access clearance. They can fit in a car space, delivering one with a truck; however, they will require a minimum of 3 metres of clearance.
